Placed in a residential context, the site is located at a corner and is abutted by roads on two sides. The context didn’t allow for too much interaction, hence the design required us to create a dynamic interaction between the spaces within the house. Transitional areas between the public and private spaces help separate functions and enables intermingling of spatial volumes.
The design of this Chinese cuisine restaurant in Bangalore steers clear of two dimensional elements and gaudy colours that define such restaurants in India. Private dining spaces are screened off in mesh fabric that represent and evoke outsized Chinese lanterns. Lit from the floor, they glow in the mood lighting of the space. The bar backdrop is rendered in subtle cloud pattern reminiscent of Chinese motifs and imagery. With a stark black wall that runs the entire length of the property as a backdrop and the overall neutral colours, the space defers to the cuisine that it serves
Architecture, at its very best, celebrates life. It is a measure of joy in living, brought out through spaces which are evocative, spaces which are never static, constantly reflecting the inherent flux in nature. It is often a quest for simplicity and serendipity, qualities which are rare to articulate, qualities which then are overlooked for brash, loud interpretations and complexities. The ‘Skewed House’ by LIJO.RENY.architects is a true reflection of the power of architecture to create spaces which transcends mundane notions and trivialities to elevate and celebrate the sense of being.

Designed as a single floor dwelling, this house is a luxurious sprawl in the lap of a natural surrounding. The house is responsive to the series of palm trees that existed before and essentially orients itself towards it. It is designed to be inclusive of the natural elements- the sun, earth, water, air and fragments of the blue sky. The layout segregates through a level difference, the parent's and son's living units and yet unites through a meeting place, which is the more open central bay. It’s a linear organization that separates the front street side from the rear garden and gives the garden a sense of privacy. From the garden side it’s a low stretch of a horizontal formation, parallel to the line of the ground.

White is currently working on another 4 bedroom luxury apartment in Hiranandani towers (OMR, Chennai) where work is progressing into the construction stage. The Client’s brief for the project was to design a contemporary apartment home using modern materials and finishes. They were keen to move away from hardwood furniture and wood veneer finishes which is the norm in most Indian homes. The project was interesting as we wanted to create spaces that were modern with clean lines but we also wanted to introduce colours and detail with an emphasis on luxury.
The living, dining and kitchen spaces are open plan. Patterned screens in Corian are used to define and separate functions. In the living room, different shades of blue create a soothing environment and connect the eye to the sea views beyond. Each bedroom has been designed around the specific tastes of the individuals and each has a completely unique character. The daughter’s bedroom has a young and lively feel with a vibrant multi-coloured palette. The son’s bedroom is more masculine with navy blue, greys and bronze with geometric patterning. The master bedroom is a modern twist on a ‘royal purple’ colour scheme.
The owners of this small lower ground floor Bloomsbury apartment wanted a warm, inviting home for when they were in town The apartment was converted into an open plan space to make it light and airy. A whitened oak floor was installed, which helped brighten dark areas. A double sofa bed, incorporating storage for bedding, graces the living room along with a storage ottoman and wall units that conceal the TV. A console table cleverly opens up to become a dining table to comfortably seat four. In the bedroom we replaced the existing wardrobe doors with light reflecting mirrored doors; adding silvery wallpaper helps add life and bounces more precious light around the space.
